Located just 10 kilometers northeast of Varanasi city center, Sarnath (Isipatana) is one of the four most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage destinations on earth. Following his supreme enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, Gautama Buddha walked to Sarnath to deliver his historic first sermon—the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Setting the Wheel of Dharma in Motion)—to his five former ascetic companions.

Key Monuments in the Sacred Enclosure

• Dhamek Stupa: A colossal cylindrical stone stupa standing 43.6 meters tall with a diameter of 28 meters. Built in 500 CE over an earlier Mauryan foundation, its lower level features exquisite Gupta floral carvings and swastika motifs.
• The Ashoka Pillar & Lion Capital: Sarnath Archaeological Museum houses the world-famous polished sandstone Lion Capital of Ashoka (3rd century BCE) with four back-to-back lions, adopted as the official National Emblem of the Republic of India.
• Mulagandha Kuti Vihara: Built by the Mahabodhi Society in 1931, featuring magnificent interior Japanese fresco murals painted by Kosetsu Nosu depicting the life of Lord Buddha.
• Anagarika Dharmapala Bodhi Tree: Grown from a sapling of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
